History is a mandatory subject for junior cycle students and an optional subject for the Leaving Cert.
Junior Cert History
The Junior Certificate students cover close to the whole of world history from the dawn of time. In their course they cover a vast range of history including the Stone Age, the Iron Age in Ireland, Celtic Ireland, Christianity in Ireland, ancient and classical culture (Romans/Egyptians/Greeks), the Medieval period, the Renaissance, the Reformations, the Plantations, the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the Industrial and Agricultural Revolutions, the Irish Famine, the World Wars, the 1916 Rebellion, Ireland in the Emergency, the founding of the European Economic Community (EEC/EU), the effects of World War II on Europe, The Cold War, the 70′s in Ireland and “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland.
Leaving Cert History
The Leaving Certificate course is fairly similar to the Junior Cert coarse, except the class choose between early Ireland or modern world history. Normally the class does modern world history. The modern world history course covers the World Wars effects on the modern world, the Cold Wars, rise and fall of communism, the Iron Curtain and important people such as John F. Kennedy and Stalin and their effect on the modern world we live in today.
