History of the Musical

Mr. G. O’Brien and Mrs. C. Byrne brought the musical back to CBC Monkstown with the introduction of female parts being played by females, initially by the girls from Rathdown (1990) and since 1991 to the present, by the girls from Loreto College, Foxrock.

The production is initiated annually by the CBC, Board of Management, which issues an invitation to the Board of Management in Loreto College, Foxrock to participate in our musical production.

The current aim of the musical is to integrate all interested students from fourth year in both colleges to perform in a week long musical production in March/ April of the academic year, dependent on Spring Mid Term/Easter breaks.

• Mr. G. O’Brien had initial responsibility as project manager for the musical from 1990-1997 inclusive.
• Mr. B. O’Farrell, who had been involved since 1991 in set design, stage management and lighting took over the role from 1998 – 2003.
• Mr. B. Dooley assumed the role in 2004 having directed and produced from 2001, currently managing the musical and other drama contributions for the school.

As the project spans over the majority of the year, this has contributed to the claim by students “that the musical has to be one of the most central aspects/ memorable experiences of fourth year”.

The stage, built as part of a multi-purpose hall in 1954/55 has staged productions since its inception with Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in the 1950’s and early 1990’s and now the music of Coward, Rogers & Hammerstein and Porter right up to Boublil and Schonberg in 2010 continues to entertain our patrons each year.

The support of Mr. P. Keating (CBC Principal 1986 -2009),  Dr. G. Berry (Current CBC Principal 2009 – Present), Mr. P. Fox (CBC Vice Principal 1989 – present); Sr. Brege (Loreto Principal – 2003), Ms. N. Mannion (Loreto Principal 2005 – Present) has been invaluable to the continuation of this collaborative process between the two colleges over the years.

Other members of staff who have assisted the progress/ production value of the musical over the years include: Ms. J. Doyle, Mr. N. Ferguson, Ms. C. Maguire, Mr. D. Maher, Mr. C Mc Mahon, Mr. D. Morgan, Mr. L. Murnane, Ms. P. O’Toole, Ms. A. Smyth.
