Lent in CBC Monkstown Park

This year, our school will join together for a very special day in our liturgical calendar as we celebrate the beginning of the Lenten period. CBC Monkstown students and staff will be attending a very special Lenten Service, led by Fr. Michael Coady, on Wednesday 22^nd February 2012 at 10am in St. Patrick’s Church. During the mass, there will be a distribution of ashes to mark our turning from our sin.

Lent is a 40 day period where we get ready to renew ourselves by looking at our faults and making a commitment to live a better life. This year, Lent starts with Ash Wednesday on February 22nd, and ends with Easter Sunday on April 8th. Often the question is asked: what do we do for lent? Well, there are many things we can do! Jesus set out three specific guidelines for us to follow during this time:

Pray – Pray in our own time and go to Church

Fast – Give up something we really like

Give alms – Raise money for charity

Why did Jesus single out prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for his disciples? Simple, the Jews considered these three as the cardinal works of the religious life, the three great pillars on which the good life was based. We are called to journey with the Lord in a special season of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and penitence as we prepare to celebrate the feast of Easter, the Christian Passover. As we begin this holy season of testing and preparation, let’s ask the Lord for a fresh outpouring of his Holy Spirit that we may grow in faith, hope, and love and embrace his will more fully in our lives. Perhaps we might take time to ponder the big question for ourselves: what will we do? As a strong community of faith, CBC Monkstown will be incorporating the three guidelines of prayer, fasting and alms giving throughout the Lenten period. 

Our CBC Prayer Space

In terms of prayer, the sanctuary of our school oratory is always available for staff and students. The beginning of Lent also arrives with an introduction of our Lenten Cross in the oratory. To symbolise our turning away from our faults, everyone is invited to ‘pin a prayer’ to our Lenten Cross. In addition, we are also introducing a weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Wednesday in our School Oratory from 8.30am-1.30pm. This new initiative will hope to build a stronger sense of faith within our school community and coincides with the preparations that are being made for the International Eucharistic Congress 2012. Students also note that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on Friday 24^th February from 10am – 11.50am as we enter this very reflective period in our Church Calendar.

Giving Alms this Lenten Period

Finally, to coincide with almsgiving, CBC will be reconnecting with Concern to try and raise enough money to help support their cause for the underprivileged throughout third world countries. This year alone, our 1^st and 2^nd Year Students grouped together to raise €1767 for the Concern Fast Appeal in November 2011. Stay tuned for more information on this good cause and for weekly updates about activities that will be happening over this very reflective season!
