“To Be With The Poor In Africa”

As the motto highlights the project aims to forge a link between students from CBC Monkstown with local communities in Zambia. Each year a group of students head to Lusaka to work and help with local projects in need. We will return to Zambia next June.
This year, 40 students applied to go to Zambia on our immersion project. After an initial application and interview process the final 14 students were selected. The project has developed significant interest among students from all year groups which keeps the project rejuvenated and alive in the mindset of CBC students and families. Although the negativity of recession affects us all, our Christian consciousness towards those less fortunate than ourselves always comes to the forefront and the support will materialise for our various fundraising activities.
Every time we travel to Zambia is a ‘first’ for us. Since 2002, over 40 students have taken the journey to Zambia to be with the poor of the Mississi Compound and N’Gombe – two community based projects which are a part of the focus of our commitment.
This year, 14 students travel with a combination of fourth and fifth year students on board. We intend to travel to Zambia in early June 2010. Fundraising has begun in earnest as we have a shorter cycle of fundraising before the group set off on the journey to Zambia. Already a school music concert, coffee mornings and other initial events have got us up and running, but the task is far from complete. Some of our future planned activities include cake sales, church gate collections, golf events, sponsored rowathon’s etc. and all details will be updated on the site.
In preparation for the personal significance of our journey, we take time out to reflect each Monday with the support of the school chaplain – Mr. Farrell. This enables us to get to know each other as well as understand our own reasons as we progress towards our goal in June – being with the poor in Africa.
Recently, students from the previous trip to Zambia and from our current group attended the ERST mass on RTE to highlight the importance of our mission to the wider CBC community. More information shortly on a highly successful visit to Zambia in June 2010.
Come and participate in one of our fund raisers.
Also remember any donation however small is welcome.
