Sport in CBC Monkstown – Introduction
Sport is an integral part of the curriculum in CBC Monkstown and it is therefore compulsory for all students to participate in sport. Although Sixth Years are exempt from compulsory attendance it is advisable that they participate in a form of regular exercise.
Rugby
CBC Monkstown is a rugby-playing school. Therefore, rugby is the principle sport in the college. This takes place in the autumn and winter terms, beginning in September and ending in April, depending on outstanding fixtures or competitions.
It is compulsory for all First Years to participate in rugby for the entire U13s season.
Training takes place either on the rugby pitches on school grounds and on the all-weather pitches in Monkstown Leisure Centre. These are used for the entire season.
For any queries relating to Junior Cycle rugby (First Year to Third Year), contact Mr. O’Donovan, the Junior Cycle Rugby Co-Ordinator.
For any queries relating to Senior Cycle rugby (Fourth Year to Sixth Year), contact Mr. Ferguson.
For any queries relating to individual players, contact the individual’s Team Coach.
For any queries relating to player conduct, see Page 13 of college’s Student Journal 2012
Training times, coaches and the CBC Rugby Fixture List can be found on this website.
Athletics
After the rugby season has ended, Athletics becomes the main focus for the spring and summer terms. Various Track and Field events are included (e.g. sprints, hurdles, middle distance, triple jump, pole vault, etc.). For any queries relating to Athletics contact Mr. Finnegan (Gamesmaster for Athletics and Sports Day).
Non-Rugby Sports
Non-Rugby Sports are also available in CBC Monkstown. These sports take place from the beginning of the school year. Students who do not wish to play rugby must sign up to do a non-rugby sport (Second Year to Fifth Year inclusive). All non-rugby sports take place on a Wednesday afternoon between 1:30pm and 3:45pm. These sports include Cross Country (runners must run 3-4 times a week), Swimming, Basketball, Golf and Tennis.
Further information on these sports can be found on this website under Policy
For any queries relating to Non-Rugby Sports, contact Mrs. Ryan (Gamesmaster for Non-Rugby Sports).
All students are informed of changes to training / matches, venue, appropriate sportswear etc. Whereas all reasonable effort will be made to update these to the website, it is the student who will have the most recent information and who is responsible for communicating these to his parents.
