CBC Success at Irish Indoor Rowing Championships

CBC Monkstown’s Indoor Rowing Team (MIRT) had their most successful year ever at the Irish Indoor Rowing National Championships which took place in DCU last Saturday. There were a total of five medalists as well as a large number of personal best scores from a record 32 CBC entrants.

The day started early with the U13 rugby players competing in the 9:30am event. There were high scores from Dan Casey, Alec Byrne, Daragh Spillane, Tom Kelly and Conor Montayne. Louis Cush just missed out on the medals, coming fourth. Alec Holmes and Jack McAteer can 2nd and 3rd in their event in a tight race where Alec just beat Jack by 2 metres in the final few seconds.

The J14 race also saw some strong performances from CBC rowers. Conor Byrden scored the highest from second year with 1,001m. Sean O’Donnell was the highest scoring Monkstown rower in this event scoring 1,058m over the 4 minute race.

CBC’s biggest success of the day came in one of the most competitive events of the day, the Junior 15. Personal best scores came from MIRT newcomers James Nea, Michael Courtney and John O’Connor. A competitive race between Chris McGovern and Dylan Hanney saw McGovern come out on top by just 6 metres. CBC were however to claim two medals from the J15 race with fourth year Dan Hazley winning gold and Junior Cup player Jack McGrath coming in second. There were also excellent performances and personal bests from Marcus Halwax (4th) and Conor Boyle (14th).

The Junior 16 event saw some very fast scores from CBC’s rowers. Again personal bests came from Noel Kane, Ros Tierney and Fergus Spillane who scored his first sub 7min 20s 2k. Two students were to break 7mins 10sec when Jamie Noone and Ciaran Ennis broke their own records. CBC were also to compete and win in the final event of the day when they beat Blackrock college in the TY team challenge event by nearly 35 seconds.

Details of all the scores from the day as well as photos can be seen on the Irish Rowing website www.iaru.ie.

Thanks to all the parents who gave up their Saturdays to support their sons in the event. Congratulations also to Mr. Finnegan who came third in his category on the weekend.

The event was an excellent warm up for the nine students from CBC who will be competing at the European Indoor Rowing Championships in Paris this coming January.

The European Indoor rowing Championships are taking place on January 22nd, 2011 in Paris, France. There are a record number of eight competitors involved from CBC Monkstown: Conor Boyle, Dan Hazley, Fergus Spillane, Jamie Noone, Marcus Hallwax, Michael McHugh, Noel Kane and Ros Tierney.
