TY CBC Monkstown 2020/21
Welcome & Introduction September 2020
Dear Students, Parents & Guardians,
Welcome to CBC Transition Year 2020/21. As our school settles back into a new routine we are taking on the challenges of social distancing and protection from COVID 19. Looking at the TY Programme specifically, I wish to give you all a sense of the possibilities for the year to come.
While the current restrictions are in place the programme for students will be largely class-based and online. With robust preventative measures in place and strong adherence to new expectations, the students can occasionally branch away from the timetable and try out new ventures, gain experience of work requirements, social issues and campaigns. Workshops can be held in school and active participation outside the regular timetable can take place.
In order for all these things to work well, we must collectively settle into a good working environment for us all within the COVID 19 restrictions. I therefore envisage more classroom-based activities up to mid-term in October with the introduction of online courses for students to work on in their own time. I have arranged outdoor activities within the guidelines of the COVID restrictions also. The schedule will therefore break up as follows:
September 2020 – October 2020: Classroom-based activities and outdoor pursuits/days out
October 2020– December 2020: Classroom-based activities and in school talks and workshops
January 2021 – Easter 2021: Classroom-based activities and outdoor activities & in school talks & workshops
Easter 2021 – May 2021: Classroom-based activities/online completions and outdoor pursuits In order to engage in workshops and online courses and activities, students will need to pay for the upcoming event. I propose to inform you of the activities for each term/half-term in advance and setting a budget for you to pay a total each term.

NOTE: ACCESS TO COMPUTER OR LAPTOP FOR STUDENTS
As we will be undertaking online courses throughout the year it would be useful for students to have access to a lap-top or computer during the school week. As we have no computer room activities at present due to COVID 19, students may be requested to carry in their lap-top for TY tutorial class so they could work individually during that time.

Transition Year is a one-year programme between the Junior Certificate examination and the beginning of Leaving Certificate programmes. The Transition Year Programme (TYP) is supported by the Department of Education and Science and fits in with their policy of providing the option of a six-year cycle for all second level students.
|
|
The TYP is a broadly-based programme which includes traditional academic subjects, career education, work experience and personal and social development and aims to integrate these activities with a view:-
The T.Y CurriculumThe Transition Year aims to give students an opportunity to consider their future in a year free from undue examination pressure. Instead students are expected to learn because of their interest in the curriculum and for reasons of self-development.
- To provide a learning structure which promotes maturity
- To be learning led rather than exam led
- To co-operate with all educational partners, particularly parents, in providing a broad and enriching educational experience
- To provide learning opportunities through experiences outside the classroom
- To develop life skills
- To enable students to become independent learners.
