Charlotte Quay was the venue for the Docklands Schools Rowing Blitz on a warm and sunny 5th May in Dublin. The CBC students rowed in a coxed quad (4 rowers holding two oars) over a 200m sprint course organised by Rowing Ireland. Three of the four crews qualified for the semi-finals and two then reached the final for the opportunity to win the overall prize. The gold medals were never in doubt as a crew of Giulio Fantini, Niall Monahan, Darragh O’Kane and Fillippo Anderlini led after the first stroke and powered over the line with a three-length win. For all participants it proved to be a really nice taste of the sport and an opportunity to see the potential to take the discipline to the next level.
Great success at this years East Leinster Competition with over 10 athletes medaling and qualifying for the Leinster Finals on the 18th of May.
Congratulations to Leon Reilly (6th year) and Andy Cullinan (5th year) on their incredible success at the Oxford University School Competition on Saturday. This competition is the largest school competition in the world, with over 700 teams participating. The competition begins with regional rounds across the UK, Ireland, Europe and the rest of the world. 104 teams were then selected to take part in the finals day at the Oxford Union itself on Saturday. On the day of the competition, all teams compete in four debates and the top eight of them qualify for the semi-finals. The best two teams from each semi-final then make it to the grand final. Teams are given only fifteen minutes to prepare their speeches in these debates. Following debates about social media, a universal basic income, parent/child relations and the value of citizen journalism, Leon and Andy finished in the top eight teams. In their semi-final, they were proposing that 'cultural defence' should be a mitigating factor in criminal trials. After an excellent performance in that semi, the two boys made it through to the final. You can watch Andy and Leon's speeches below. The final featured three other teams, two from Canada and one from the Netherlands. They debated a motion based on the idea of a perfect city where people's lives of happiness relied on the suffering of a single child. Unfortunately, they ultimately lost the final to an amazing team from Canada. This doesn't take anything from the phenomenal achievement of our students on Saturday. They are the first team from CBC to ever reach the final of Oxford Schools' and the first Irish team to do it in nearly a decade. We are so proud of them both. Congratulations to Mr. Finnegan and his students on being announced as joint winners of the Thomas F Meagher Foundation - BEST VIDEO/AUDIO CLIP - JOINT WINNERS 2022. The Students of CBC summitted pictures and videos based on what the Irish flag meant to them in 2022. The song Tar Abhaile was composed by past teacher Colm Rooney, with Mr. Finnegan and students singing the song. Report by Giulio Fantini (TY) On the 13th of January. CBC Monkstown and Synge St. met in the plate final which would take place in Oblate Hall. Monkstown got off to a strong start in the first quarter leading 11 points to 2. Strong work from the Monkstown captain Alex McCarthy would set up a good lead for the rest of the game. Synge St. would cut the deficit in the second quarter which ended 15 to 8 for CBC, giving them a 7 point advantage leading up to the second half. he Second half was much the same as the first where CBC started of strong and were able to gain a larger lead thanks to the depth and skill of the team. The third quarter ended 19-10. The fourth quarter was where CBC solidified their lead and confirmed the victory making them the victors of the plate. The match ended 25 to 14 for Ms Dempsey’s CBC. The end of the calendar year is nearly upon us and as we head into the Christmas season and school holidays, it is a good time to reflect on the past few months in CBC and beyond. The Covid-19 global pandemic continues apace in all its various guises and this has presented immense challenges for many in our society. In true CBC spirit, the school community has managed, with your fantastic support, to maintain a level of ‘normality’ in these challenging times. The past few months have displayed, once again, our firm belief that all schools are much more than places where information is passed on. Schools are about relationships, connections and experiences. Our students, staff, parents and the wider school community have collectively galvanised their efforts to ensure that teaching, learning and student well-being is very much at the core of all things in CBC. We wish to take this opportunity to thank and remember in our prayers all those among our parent/guardian body who are helping on the frontline, be they in healthcare or other important services. We ask that all of our CBC boys show leadership and responsibility and help out at home and be kind to one another. At times like this, we remember the school’s motto, Certa Bonum Certamen = Do the Right Thing. We also remember that some families in our school community are mourning the loss of loved ones in recent months from the COVID-19 virus. Go ndéana Dia trócaire orthu. These weeks of the Advent Season are given to us as a time of waiting and preparing for Christmas. As followers of Jesus Christ, the Advent invitation is extended to each of us to take time to get to know Jesus afresh and give time to genuine prayer. Over the Christmas period, we have time to reflect on our lives and ask ourselves where we need to make adjustments or indeed initiate fresh beginnings. Christmas is a time like no other time in the year – it brings out the best in a lot of people. It generates a fabulous spirit and force for goodwill and generosity. As a staff in CBC, we feel so proud when we see our students, your sons, exhibit their reserves of generosity in helping those who are less fortunate in our society. This year, once again, we have witnessed the depths of compassion, commitment and character of our CBC students, your sons, who put together a fabulous array of Christmas Gift Hampers for the students of Francis Street CBS, in the heart of the Liberties in Dublin 8. Our students, your sons, can never forget that each of them can make a difference for the better in our world. It’s during moments like these that we are aware that we are truly part of something special here in CBC. Your sons continue to inspire, motivate and encourage us all to be the very best that we can be and it is always a privilege for us to welcome them to CBC each day.
I hope that you and your families have a safe, peaceful and restful Christmas. Please take time out to reconnect, to restore and to relax (watch some of those Christmas Film classics like The Great Escape and Where Eagles Dare or listen to the glorious Christmas carol, O Holy Night as sung by Martina McBride!). Le cúnamh Dé, 2022 will bring in a real sense of hope for us all. We look forward to welcoming you back to CBC on Thursday January 6th. Beir Bua agus Beannacht! Gerry Duffy, School Principal. Last Friday our TYs and some of our 5th Years took part in CBC's own @TheRunInTheDark 5k. 80 students took part with almost €1,000 raised for @MPollockTrust. See below for full results, some photos from the day and a photo finish for 6th place! Well done to Tom O'Halloran (2nd), Sean McMahon (1st) and Joe Doody (3rd).
